Choose Your Activities

Each day has a theme and a level of difficulty. If you come in a group, you can design your own week 'a la carta' or you can choose a 'standard menu'

  • Week 'A la Carta' - If you come in a group, you can design your own week choosing the topics and the levels that suit your group's abilities and cultural preferences.
  • Week 'Menú' - If you come on your own, there are three pre-designed weeks you can join: from less experienced Spanish students to a more advanced level.

Typical Daily Timetable

  • 9:00 breakfast
  • 10:00 -12:30 Theory lessons based on some aspect of the Spanish culture or language: literature, history, art, nature, politics, every day life and customs, grammar ...
  • 12:30 Conversation practice. Most times it will be outside the classroom interacting with the locals, or listening to a local guide. The activities will have something to do with the previous lesson.
  • 14:00 Lunch and siesta
  • 16:00-19:00 Cultural visit to nearby villages or places of interest.
  • 19:00h Relaxation time.
  • 20:00h Dinner at home or in a restaurant

Day 1 Arrival day

Airport collection - Settle down in the hotel - Walk around Barco de Avila - Group dinner in the hotel.

Days 2 to 7 depend on difficulty level:

Last day: Airport Drop Off

On the last day, if we have time on the way to the airport, we will stop in Avila to have a short walk on top of its most magnificent medieval walls, and we can also have lunch there.

1. PRESENTATIONS AND SMALL TALK - more...

Level:Easy / Intermediate / Advanced
Theory lesson:Introductions. Topics to initiate a conversation. Attitudes and clichés.
  • 1st part of the lesson: Everybody introduce herself/himself. Name, age, job, where do you live, hobbies, the usual. Not very long.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: Work in couples to act in specific situations that you may encounter. Maximum 5 minutes for each one. The specific situation will set the difficulty level: Example: Asking for directions: easy. Job interview: difficult.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:Out to socialise. Lunch with tapas in the local bars.
BREAK
Cultural trip:The rural way of life in central Spain: Visit to the abandoned village of Las Solanillas and the Etnografic museum of San Miguel de Corneja guided by the Mayoress.

2. FOOD - more...

Level:Easy / Intermediate / Advanced
Theory lesson:Spanish cooking. How important is food in the Spanish way of life? Most popular dishes and regional cuisine.
  • 1st part of the lesson: We will read a text about Spanish dishes and learn cooking and food vocabulary. We will read the chosen recipe and its ingredients, and make a shopping list. Example: Paella.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: Each one in the group will talk about any Spanish dish they have tried that created an impression (good or bad).
Practice lesson:We go shopping. We will locate the shops we need to visit to buy all the ingredients: fish shop, butchers, bakery and the local supermarket. Each person will be responsible for one particular type of ingredient: fish, meat, vegetables, vine, pudding, bread and other groceries. We will also visit the local weekly market in the square.
LUNCH BREAK
Cultural trip: Traditional Queimada Visit to the nearby historic village of Piedrahita. We will then drive to the guide's family home and spend the afternoon preparing the dishes together, and doing a bit of wine tasting. Dinner, cooked by group, will be followed by a traditional Queimada.

3. NATURE AND WILDLIFE - more...

Level:Easy / Intermediate
Theory lesson:Spanish unspoilt landscapes and wildlife.
  • 1st part of the lesson: We will read a text about the Spanish national parks and most relevant wildlife. It is vocabulary building activity, as it is a text full of information with lots of animals and plants.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: each participant will talk about his/her favourite animal.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Drive to Gredos National Park
Practice lesson:Visit to the Gredos Visitor's Center (La Casa del Paque: "Pinos Cimeros" with talk by the local warden (*).
PICNIC LUNCH BY THE TORMES RIVER
Cultural trip: Wild Gredos Goats Short drive to "La Plataforma": the start point of the trekking routes. We will try to see the iconic wild goat. Coffee at The King's old hunting lodge, now a 4* hotel.

4. HISTORY (in Salamanca) - more...

Level:Intermediate
Theory lesson:A bit of Spanish history (not much).
  • 1st part of the lesson: We will read a text summarising the Spanish history: The Romans. "La Reconquista" and the Muslim legacy. The "Conquistadores". The golden Years. Napoleonic wars. Spanish Civil war and the Franco years. Democracy... The complexity of the text will vary slightly according to the level.
  • 2nd part. Each participant will talk about their favourite historic event and we will compare points of view. Example: you can choose the French wars and talk about the battle of Salamanca. It is interesting to see how explanations of the same event differ from one country to another.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:Review the Spanish history with a walking a tour around 5 buildings representative of each of the main periods.
LUNCH WITH TAPAS AROUND THE UNIVERSITY AND MAIN SQUARE
Cultural trip:Visit to the Casa Lis Museum, Visit to Ieronimus exhibition: the medieval towers of the cathedrals. Visit to the cloister of "Las Dueñas".

5. ART (in Salamanca) - more...

Level:Easy / Intermediate.
Theory lesson:Spanish art through history: painting, sculpture and architecture.
  • 1st part of the lesson: We will read a text summarising very briefly Spanish art history and the lives of some of the best known artists.
  • 2nd part. Each participant will talk about their favourite Spanish piece of art, and why they find it remarkable.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:Treasure hunt. Look for the carved features in the city's monuments. Based of a Town hall initiative for children to learn about their architecture heritage.

Cultural trip:Visit to the Casa Lis Museum, Visit to Ieronimus exhibition: the medieval towers of the cathedrals. Visit to the cloister of "Las Dueñas".

6. FOLKLORE - more...

Level:Easy / Intermediate
Theory lesson:Spanish Fiestas and traditions.
  • 1st part of the lesson: We will read a text about the main Spanish festivals and customs: Christmas, Patron Saints fiestas, Matanza, Fallas, Feria de Abril, Easter... and discover the intensity in which they are lived by Spanish people ad how they rule our work and our lives.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: We will compare them with the British fiestas, and each one of the participants will talk about any British custom or festival that they may like.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:20min. drive to Béjar to see the Santuario de la Virgen del Castañar and the oldest bullring in Spain presented by the local guide.
LUNCH BREAK in Béjar (Picnic by the sanctuary if the weather is good)
Cultural trip:15min. Drive from Béjar to Guijuelo, the ham capital of Spain, to have a guided tour of the local museum followed by a ham tasting experience (*). The price of the whole activity is 15 euros, but you can be assured that you will not need to have any dinner after it.

Level:Easy / Intermediate
Theory lesson:Arts, crafts and everyday life utensils.
  • We will read a a bit about traditional craftwork, and how craftsmanship in Spain has evolved to adapt to modern times. pottery, woodwork, jewellery, leather, needlework, etc.
Practice lesson:Visit to a craftsman workshop in Candelario.
LUNCH - Followed by walk around the village.
Cultural trip: Soleae Olive Oil Tasting Olive oil Tasting in Sierra de Francia by "Soleae" (*). A team of young entrepreneurs who produce high quality organic olive oil with a focus on educating people to appreciate that quality.

Level:Intermediate
Theory lesson:Spanish Painters.
  • Goya: life and work.
Cultural trip/Practice lesson:Treasure hunt.
  • We will drive to the historic village of Piedrahita, where Goya the painter used to spend his summer holidays, and learn about his paintings and the village itself following the clues that you will find scattered around the village.
  • You will have to look for information in the right places, read the clues and ask the local residents for guidance when needed. If you practise your language skills you'll be able to find the final prize.
  • We will work in small groups so everyone gets to participate. We will have a break sometime along the quest.
LUNCH
Afternoon activity:

Movie viewing: title to be chosen depending on the group's interests.

Discussion and exchange of opinions about the movie (Spanish talk).

9. LITERATURE - more...

Level:Intermediate / Advanced
Theory lesson:Spanish literature throughout history.
  • 1st part of the lesson: We will read a text about the Spanish literature, its main authors and iconic works. From the medieval Cantar del Mio Cid to the modern writers.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: We will read a famous poem by Federico García Lorca and analyse it together.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:Visit to the local library to see some of the books we have seen, with a short talk given by the librarian.
LUNCH
Cultural trip:Drive to Béjar or Salamanca to watch a classic theatre play. (*) To be specified depending on the dates of your visit.

10. THE REGIONS - more...

Level:Intermediate
Theory lesson:Spanish regions: culture variations, different accents and other languages.
  • 1st part of the lesson: Spain is a diverse country integrated by different contrasting regions that show varying economic and social structures, as well as different languages and historical, political and cultural tradition. Over a Spanish map we will go through each one of the Spanish Autonomous communities and know about the characteristics that give each one of them its identity.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: The regional accents in Spain and Latin-america. How to know recognise where they are from when you listen to people's accents. We will practise the most conspicuous ones.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:We will go to the local library and have a look at some of the Spanish newspapers and look for news related to regional issues, to do with their languages or other issues.
LUNCH
Cultural trip:Drive to Valle del Jerte, in the Extremadura region. Valle del Jerte is famous for its deep, terraced valleys where they grow the best cherries in Spain, but it is also in another autonomous community. Even though it is only 20Km away we will see how the landscape, the villages, the administration and even the language change dramatically.

11. GRAMMAR - more...

Level:Easy / Intermediate / Advanced
Theory lesson:Any grammar issues that you may find difficult.
  • 1st part of the lesson: Issues like: Difference between "ser" and "estar", the hard and soft vowels, pretérito vs imperfecto, "por" and "para", the "R" sound, etc... the topics will be different depending on the level.
  • 2nd part of the lesson: Refranes, Sayings and Proverbs. We will have a gave to discover some of the most popular and each participant will choose one to write a short text with it.
  • 1 hour for the first part and 1 hour for the second, with tea break in between.
Practice lesson:A short treasure hunt around the village.
LUNCH in a restaurant
Cultural trip:Trip to be chosen from the following: Gredos mountains, Jerte Valley, Candelario or Sierra de Francia, whichever of them hasn't been included within the week's activities..
